Alteration: Growth and Shrinking powers

Growth

  • Action: Free
  • Range: Personal
  • Duration: Sustained
  • Cost: 3 points per rank

Each rank of Growth gives you the following:

  • +1 Mass (ordinary humans start at Mass 2)
  • +1 Strength
  • +1 Stamina, which also affects Fortitude and Toughness (Constructs who lack Stamina only increase Fortitude and Toughness)

Every three full ranks of Growth give you the following:

  • +1 Size, which also affects your Reach (ordinary humans start at Size/Reach -2)
  • +1 Speed (ordinary humans start at Speed 0)
  • -2 to Stealth skill
  • +2 to Intimidation skill
  • -1 to active defenses (Dodge and Parry), as you become a bigger target
  • -1 to all of your attack rolls, as your foes become smaller (from your perspective)

Growth modifiers are restricted by PL limits. When converting existing characters, use their level of Growth as-is, but use the cost and modifiers here.

Extra
Density: You don’t actually grow, you just get heavier. Your effect rank is only added to your Mass, Strength, and Stamina (which raises Fortitude and Toughness). Your Size, Speed, skills, active defenses, and attacks are unaffected. This is commonly combined with Impervious (for the extra Toughness). +1 cost per rank.

Flaw
Maximum Size Only: You can only switch between your normal size and your largest size, nothing in between. This Flaw is worth nothing if combined with Density Increase. Flat -1 point.

Shrinking

  • Action: Free
  • Range: Personal
  • Duration: Sustained
  • Cost: 3 points per rank

Each rank of Shrinking gives you the following:

  • -3 Mass (ordinary humans start at Mass 2)
  • -1 Size, which also affects your Reach (ordinary humans start at Size/Reach -2)
  • -1 Speed (ordinary humans start at Speed 0). This is technically a circumstance penalty. Your Speed is not considered debilitated if reduced below -5.
  • +2 to Stealth skill
  • -2 to Intimidation skill
  • +1 to active defenses (Dodge and Parry), as you become a smaller target
  • +1 to all of your attack rolls, as your foes become larger (from your perspective)

Shrinking is three times as efficient as Growth; each level of Shrinking reduces Mass by 3, where each level of Growth increases it by 1. This is balanced, because Growth gives many more advantages than Shrinking does! Shrinking modifiers are restricted by PL limits. When converting existing characters, divide their listed level of Shrinking by 4, round to the nearest whole number, then use the cost and modifiers here.

Extra
Atomic: As per p. 128. You may take this if you can shrink to Size -7 or smaller, which requires Shrinking 5 for most humans. Flat +1 point.

Flaws
Minimum Size Only: You can only switch between your normal size and your smallest size, nothing in between. Flat -1 point.

Reduced Strength: Normally, you retain full Strength while shrunk; this Flaw changes that. Subtract 3 ranks of effective Strength for every rank of Shrinking used. Technically, this is a circumstance penalty, not an actual reduction; it can drop effective Strength well below -5 without Strength counting as debilitated. This Flaw does not pay back its full value because reduced Strength imposes a diminishing penalty at higher ranks. -1 cost per rank.
